Visual identity for Slovak professional ice hockey team Vlci Žilina. A new management recently took control of this traditional club, founded in 1925, and decided to come up with a brand new identity.
They are planning to incorporate modern management, communication and coaching strategies within the sport organisation with a long history and stable fan base, therefore the identity was supposed to reflect both aspects of tradition and also the vision of progressive future.
Vlci means wolves and the head of a wolf has been an usual brand for the city´s teams for decades. Just in last 15 years the club has changed its logo several times, fans didn´t feel really connected to any of the previous symbols and systematic identity was completely absent. The aim was to avoid a typical overly illustrative and decorative style of hockey related logos and create a more universal symbol with flexible and timeless look, which can be easily applied across all print and digital media.
The new logo took a fresh take on the stylization of the wolf head. It´s pointy character evokes the forest, wolf´s natural habitat. The letter Z is also incorporated within the shape and overall clean, bold lines paired with wolf´s confident gaze are looking towards ambitious future.
In order to achieving more unitary approach across all channels, forest-themed, pointy shaped patterns were applied as main stylistic feature, which provides dynamics, distinction and beneficial connection to the main logo. Together with an application of neon green as one of the primary colours and bold typography, the outputs got desired vibrant and contemporary presence. An interesting change is also the use of vibrant neon green as one of the primary colours, instead of team´s usual yellow shade.
Whole project includes the design of print materials, online media, jerseys, merchandise, enviromental graphics with possible tools for using motion graphics.
